Calgary Gardening - A Year Of Changing Seasons

Written By Bob Frank

A Calgary Garden is about the seasons. Gardeners in Calgary should make the most of each season and appreciate what it can do for their Calgary Garden.

Passion is a word that could define a Calgary Gardener

It always seems like summer goes by so fast and there is not a lot of time to truly enjoy Gardens in Calgary. As a Gardener myself, in the Calgary area, I like to spend as much time in my garden as possible, weather permitting.

The some times drawn out but mild Calgary winters are for reflection. Once should pay attentions to ambitions and desires during the off season.

After a long winter, the birth of spring makes Calgary Gardens jump with color and smells.

Every year, the lilacs give off a sweet scent in many Calgary Gardens during the spring. Spring also makes me see Nectar being nourished by a passing bee in a Calgary garden.

A Gardener only needs a small amount of garden plants to feel the vibrancy that plant life has to offer.

It's amazing how even your pets will scramble around with more energy as the dawning of spring becomes apparent.

The warmth that spring has to offer is truly an amazing thing.

I am convinced that Mother Winter has one purpose; to allow Calgary Gardeners to plan for the next season.

The Gardening season in Calgary is usually about half the year. When winter finally takes her icy grasp, gardeners have taken accustom to a weather pattern called a Chinook.

Chinooks are famous for their warming conditions. For some people this is good, but for Calgary Gardeners it means damage to plants and gardens. The precious dormant plants can sometimes be tricked into thinking that it is spring even going so far as starting new tender growth, which can be lethal when the next winter storm hits.

Calgary Chinooks pose another problem for gardens. The wind. Due to the pressure variance associated with Calgary Chinooks, high winds can dry out plants in your gardens.

The cedar, a slightly out of zone plant that is found in Calgary is one plant that is particularly vulnerable. It is bested to use burlap to wrap plants such as these.

After all these precautions, spring arrives once again completing yet another cycle.

The newly formed plants again have life, completing the cycle of another year.

Every year that goes by seems to go faster than the last!

I have been Gardening in Calgary for many years and have learned to love all the weather has to offer. This even includes winter and her damaging Chinook.

We must all celebrate and enjoy the off season so that we can get back to the basics and have fun designing the Calgary Garden space for the next coming season.

On the other hand, it might makes some sense to invest in some indoor plants to help with your inspirations.

Happy Gardening!
