Considerations For Starting a Home Based BusinessWritten By Kyle BradyFor many photography hobbyists, starting a home based photography business is a dream they have been pursuing for a long time. After all, who wouldn't want to be self-employed doing something that they love to do. And it can be a wonderful career, however it is important to consider a few things before jumping in with both feet. Below are some questions to ask yourself:
First off, what type of photography do you want to specialize in? As in any field, the specialists are most in demand and you would be wise to choose one or two areas to concentrate your efforts in. For example, if you love children you might want to specialize in babies and families. If you however prefer adults perhaps weddings would better suit you. Don't expect to be a jack of all trades however and be able to compete with the specialists. Do you have a marketing plan? If not, you should work on one. It isn't just enough to take good pictures to success as a professional photographer. You have to be able to market yourself and bring in new clients on a consistent basis. This will take a marketing plan that is constantly analyzed and tracked for success. There are a variety of ways to market your photography business. Some that you may include are a website, yellow pages, newspapers, flyers, posters, press releases, and word-of-mouth. If one technique fails then try something else. Remember to track your efforts so you will not waste time with what doesn't work in your area. What is your business brand? A brand will provide a consistent experience for your customer. It is important to build a brand that your customer can relate with. A brand is more than just colors, logos and styles. It is a way of doing business and a way of interacting with your clients. Do you have a budget? Cash flow is the death of many a small business. Remember that the key to success in any business is to have more money coming in than goes out. Otherwise you won't be in business very long! You will need to establish a budget in order to set money aside for equipment, advertising, taxes, material, etc. Most importantly you also need to pay yourself! Without a budget it is easy to let expenses overcome the income. A budget is critical to keeping costs under control. Where can you turn to for help? It is highly advisable to seek out help from other small business owners. Don't look just for someone who is good technically, but for someone who also is a good business person. They can provide you with a sense of direction and help when things seem overwhelming. With so much to do, running your own business can be very lonely sometimes. A mentor can mean the difference between success and failure. In conclusion, owning your own photography studio can be a rewarding and exciting career. But it is important to treat it as a business and not as a hobby. I hope that this article has helped you with some ideas to get you started and I wish you much success!
